Fred Gorman - President, Prairie Newspaper Group

Fred Gorman

Fred Gorman is the President of Black Press Group Ltd's Prairie Newspaper Group, a position he took over in 2000. He is also the publisher of the Red Deer Advocate in Red Deer, Alta.

The Prairie Newspaper Group publishes daily, weekly and real estate newspapers throughout Central Alberta, and Fred is in charge of its operations. It also publishes farm equipment newspapers to every farm in Western Canada.

Fred has served on several boards, including the Central Alberta and District Community Foundation, Red Deer Rotary Club, Central Alberta Economic Development Agency and the Chamber of Commerce.

Prior to his move to Alberta, Fred was publisher of the Peace Arch News, Black Press's community newspaper in White Rock, B.C. He was the first recipient of the White Rock/South Surrey Chamber of Commerce Apollo Award as businessman of the year.

Fred is Vice-President of the Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association, director of the National Newspaper Awards representing small market dailies, and a director of Adwest.

A graduate of McMaster University (Economics) and the CGA Program, Fred lives in Red Deer with his wife Dinah and two children.

Richard Smalley - Advertising Director, Red Deer Advocate

Richard Smalley

Richard Smalley was hired by the Red Deer Advocate as an advertising administrative assistant in 1996. Soon after joining the Advocate, he was placed in charge of national advertising and trade printing.

Later, he became the new business development co-ordinator and then the retail advertising manager, and assumed responsibility for community promotions, and revenues related to the digital side of operations for the Prairie division of Black Press.

Richard became the Advocate’s advertising director in September, 2012, responsible for retail advertising, promotions and digital revenues.

Born and raised in Calgary, Richard earned a bachelor of commerce degree with a marketing major from the University of Calgary. He moved to Red Deer with his wife Marsha in 1995, and the couple has three daughters: Kailyn, McKenna, and Peyton.

Jeff Sarich has been General Manager of Farm Press Group, a division of Black Press' Prairie Newspaper Group, since 2005.

Farm Press Group publishes four bi-weekly newspapers delivered to every farm in Western Canada, along with several annual magazines and flyers.

Jeff was hired by the Red Deer Advocate, a Black Press publication, as an advertising account representative in 1999 bringing with him a decade of advertising experience as a Product Division Manager for a successful electronics retailer.

Born and raised in Saskatoon, Jeff’s thirst for knowledge inspired him to seek courses in marketing and small business. Relocating to Red Deer, Alta., in 1987, Jeff met his wife Julie and together raised two daughters; Sarah and Becky. They live in Lethbridge.
